Our story

From a small gathering in 1966 to a vibrant, multi-ethnic family today, Glenfield Baptist Church has always been about following Jesus together. Our story is one of God’s faithfulness through every season.

A brief history

timeline

See how God has blessed us over 50 years and counting!

  • Black and white photograph, dated 15 October 1969, showing a line of vintage cars parked in a grassy field next to a small, single-story white building, with a few people standing by the entrance.

    Beginnings in a cottage

GBC begins as a small fellowship of 8 people in a cottage on our current site, with support from the Auckland Baptist Association and Northcote Baptist Church.

    Church Inauguration

Glenfield Baptist Church is officially inaugurated with 24 foundation members.

  • A black-and-white photo of two men on scaffolding, building part of the church.

    Growth & building

Under the leadership of Rev Selwyn, Rev Brian, and Rev Lloyd, GBC experiences significant growth in both congregation size and facilities, including the addition of an annex.

  • Two men conversing while on a construction site during the new construction of Glenfield Baptist Church's hall.

    Renovation & two gatherings

Major refurbishment adds a lounge and upstairs offices. A second congregation is formed, led by Pastor Stuart. Good fruit follows, but the church reverts back to one congregation in 1995.

  • Church planting

GBC plants daughter churches: Albany Baptist (with help from Longbay Baptist) and The Storehouse, a missional initiative that closes in 1997.

  • Review & refocus

A strategic review leads to the “By the Year 2000” vision. A part-time Children’s Ministry Coordinator is hired, and “Kids Life Klub” launches, helping 60+ children commit to following Jesus.

  • A man and two women singing during praise and worship in Glenfield Baptist Church's Sunday services.

    Fresh momentum

Pastors Colin and Glenda, along with their four children, join GBC, bringing renewed hope and stability. Their leadership sparks a new era of growth, deepening both church life and community engagement.

    Building for the future

A major building project begins: the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Centre, lower hall, and a third gathering space (future development potential).

    Glenfield Action Trust

Glenfield Action Trust (GAT) is formed. Glenda transitions to CEO, launching new ministries like OSCAR (before/after school care) and Legacy (support for adults with intellectual differences). GAT also oversees a CAP Debt Centre and Mainly Music, which were valued and fruitful ministries.

  • Faithful servant leadership

Associate Pastor Andrew serves faithfully and with compassion. He is remembered with deep affection as a kind and thoughtful pastor, a devoted husband, and loving father.

  • A group of Korean men in traditional attire singing on stage.

    Ethnic diversity and women’s ministry

Another feature of Ps Colin’s time at GBC was the growing ethnic diversity in the congregation. Filipino, Gujarati, South African, East Asian, Southeast Asian, and Brazilian brothers and sisters made GBC their home over the past two decades. Alongside this, Ps Glenda helped develop a women’s ministry that greatly encouraged and supported the women of the church.

    Resilience through COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic brings significant disruption to church life. Ps Colin ably shepherds the congregation through the challenges of extended lockdowns.

  • Pastoral Transition

Ps Colin retires after 23 years of faithful service. GBC farewells Colin and Glenda with warmth and gratitude. Following consultation with the board and the Northern Baptist Association, Ps Helen is called as intentional interim pastor and welcomed, along with her husband Nigel, in September.

Reflection and renewal

Under the interim leadership of Ps Helen and Nigel, GBC has entered a season of reflection and renewal — clarifying our identity, strengthening leadership structures, reconnecting with our Baptist roots, and preparing for a healthy gospel future.
