Legacy
To be, to give, to grow…
The Legacy Community project is a ground-breaking initiative that aims to provide a sense of independence, support, and belonging to people with intellectual disabilities. This project is the latest undertaking of the Glenfield Action Trust, a community-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in the Glenfield area.
At the core of this initiative is the belief that every adult has the right to choose where they live and the right to live independently. However, for people with intellectual disabilities, these rights are often overlooked or ignored, leaving them feeling isolated and disconnected from their community. The Legacy Community project aims to change this by offering a supportive environment that fosters a sense of belonging and well-being.
Living in a community provides people with intellectual disabilities with more visibility and inclusiveness, allowing them to connect with others and contribute their unique abilities and gifts. By living in a community, the rights of people with intellectual disabilities are better protected, and their voices are heard more clearly.
The Legacy Community project is a partnership between the Glenfield Action Trust and Accessible Properties (IHC), a community housing provider that specializes in providing accessible, affordable housing for people with disabilities. Together, these organizations are working to create a safe and welcoming community that offers a range of housing options for people with intellectual disabilities. Through this project, the Glenfield Action Trust and Accessible Properties are setting a new standard for community-based initiatives that promote inclusivity, support, and independence for people with intellectual disabilities.
